Members' Evening Walk around Crystal Palace led by Ian Bevan

Yesterday evening the club held one of its many outings.

This one was a particularly good one around Crystal Palace Park, or to be more precise the top half of it.

Our walk was led by Ian Bevan who has visited our club on many occasions to give talks and also led us on other local walks.

Ian is a City of London official guide and gave a most interesting history into the Crystal Palace form its beginning in Hyde Park to the move to Upper Norwood, forming the Crystal Palace Park its final demise in 1936 when it burnt down.

A great thanks to Ian for such an interest and informative walk and talk and to the members who supported the event.

Many Thanks

MITCHAM CARNIVAL - UPDATE

Just a note on how our stalls went at the Mitcham Carnival.

We had three stalls, one to display our club's work, one to show the Heritage Centre's display and one to raise funds by selling plants.

All three stalls attracted a lot of interest and there were three potential new members from the display of our work.  The plants sales went well and we raised some useful money for the club.

Everything went well except the weather.  The wind and rain did put a bit of a dampener on things and did keep a number of the public away.

Apart from that the day was enjoyed.

Regards

Alan Hutchings

ANNUAL PRINT COMPETITION

Last Wednesday the club held its Annual Print Competition for the 2012-13 competition year for Colour Prints and Monochrome Prints that had score 9 and above during the league competitions.

The judge was Don Morley who commented on the high standard of the work and that his job was not to be easy, but gave an excellent assessment of our print work.

There were 13 prints in the Mono section and 62 in the colour, no mean feat for our judge to look at, discuss, put aside for further consideration or pass by.

In the Mono Section, from the initial 13 prints, Don held back 7 and awarded Hon. Mentions to the following:-

Cathedral View                                       by    Alan Hutchings
Lids Reflections (Selfridges Window)     by    Margaret Price
Alan                                                        by    Mike Fenton

Joint 3rd place    -    Yank                       by Mike Fenton
Joint 3rd place    -    Winter Tree            by    Mike Parsons

In the Colour the judge had a much more difficult time with 62 prints to deal with and with so many prints, even those that were passed by seemed in good company as there was so much good work.

The judge held back 19 prints for a second viewing.  Normally we wouldn't mention those that were rejected at this stage, by I feel with so many good prints they are worth a mention.  So the prints passed by on the second view were:-

Charcoal Sifting in Mandalay                  by    Frances Bulman
O2 Pod                                                    by    Dave Price
Mysterious House                                   by    Mike Parsons

Rice Harvest Worker - India                    by    Ray Steines
Rocky Mountain Lake - Coluimbia          by    Stan Blake
Overboard                                               by    Ann Eeles

From the remaining 7 prints, our judge gave the following Hon. Mentions:-

Monument Valley                                    by    Stan Blake
McDonalds                                             by    Alfred Clarke

The next two Hon. Mentions, would have been joint 4th place if there had been one:-

Oily Old Cans                                         by    Martin Lordan
South Bank Steps at Evening Time       by    Alan Hutchings

The final winner and runners up were:-

1st Place    -    Mary Rose                      by    Dave Drummond
2nd Place   -    Harbour Reflections       by     Alfred Clark
3rd Place    -    City Sunset                    by     Alfred Clarke

Well done everyone who had work in the finals and congratulations to our winners, runners up and to the Hon. Mentions.

Regards

Alan Hutchings

Pat Corcoran PDI Competition for the Best Digital Image

Last Wednesday the Club held the Pat Corcoran trophy competition for the best PDI from those scoring 9.5 and above in the League Competitions during the last season.

The were 49 images in total for our judge Tim Morland to assess and from those he held back quite a number for a second look.  He then went through them a second time and dropped a few more out.  After three or four viewings, Tim finally awarded four Hon. Mentions before placing the first, second and third images.

Tim's comments were well balanced and his final selections good.

The results are as follows:-

Hon. Mentions

Shepherd in the Wind            -    Keith Brazier

MOVEMBER & BILL DOUGLAS

Many of you may have noticed Bill Douglas sporting a hairy growth on his top lip.  It is not his attempt to try and look like Errol Flynn or Clarke Gable, but Bill's way of supporting the growing Movember movement that see men, presummably, growing a moustache for the month of November to bring awarness to and raise money for the Prostate & Testicular Cancer Research.

This is a very good cause that Bill is supporting and to show our support of Bill's efforts we had a whip round at the Club on Thursday 28th of November, two days before the said growth of hair was due to be removed, and raised the magnificent sum of £67.00 to add to the sum of money that Bill has already had donated.

Well done everyone who came up triumphs for Bill on the night.

Just a note to say how well the exhibition at the Stable Yard in Morden Hall Park went.

The staff of the centre were very impressed with our work and the presentation and will stand us in good stead for another one next year.

There were many visitors to the exhibition over the five days it was held and a lot of good comments on our work.

Thanks to everyone who helped out in manning the exhibition while it was on with a special thanks to Dave D who spent many hours compiling the presentation DVD and to Mike & Alan who organised the display of prints and the actual event.

CAPEL CLASSIC CAR & MOTOR CYCLE SHOW

Hi.  This Saturday three of the club, Dave, Keith and Alan, went down to Capel near Dorking to see what was on display at the Capel Classic Car & Motor Cycle Show.

There was plenty to see apart from the cars and motor bikes and some very good photographs to be taken.  The weather was warm to say the least and no need for rain precautions.

There were some old American classic as well as some beautiful examples of some old british classics.

Hopefully we will see some good images at the club over the coming months.

Polhill - Classic Car Show

Hi.  Yesterday evening  a few of us travelled over the Polhill Garden Centre (near Seven Oaks) to look round a Classic Car show.  The entrance was free and there was plenty of old cars and motor cycles to photograph.

So if you see a number of classic car shots comming up this competition year, that's the reason.

The weather was okay, but towards the end of the evening the clouds started to roll in so we departed.

START OF A NEW CALANDER YEAR

Welcome back to the world of cameras and photography.

Our first slide competition of the new year will be judged by a panel of members.

This is a diversion from our normal procedures, but is not unknown to us as we do judge some minor competitions ourselves already.   If this works and I am sure it will, then it is something that we can continue with.

Don't forget our Annual Dinner at Park Place being organised by Pam.   Please watch your emails for further details.

Next week we have another lecture on Wren's Churches by Ian Bevan, one not to be missed.

PDI competition no. 1

Just thought I would like to comment upon our judge for our PDI Competition No.1

last Wednesday.   The judge was Marie-ange Bouchard, a relatively new judge on the circuit.

It was generally thought   that Marie-ange brought a refreshing change to some of the more staid judges.

Her approach was open to all subject matters and also both constructive and objective in the critique made.

ANNUAL DINNER

There is hoped to be another Annual Dinner again.  The date has not yet been fixed, but will be in January 2011 as normal.

If anyone would like to take on the task of orgnising this I would be most welcome to hand over the reigns on it and of course give as much help as I can.
